Anti-Rust Guide for Atlantic Seaboard Homes
By Fresnaye Painters - Expert advice from the professionals
Rust is the defining metal maintenance challenge for Atlantic Seaboard properties. From Fresnaye's elevated position down to the beachfront in Bantry Bay and Clifton, ocean salt air creates a corrosive environment that attacks unprotected steel far faster than in inland suburbs. Getting anti-rust treatment right is essential for protecting the extraordinary value of these properties.
The Correct System
Never paint over rust. Remove all rust to clean bare metal mechanically. Apply zinc-phosphate rust-inhibiting primer. Then apply hard enamel topcoat. For the most exposed beachfront positions - Bantry Bay, Clifton - two-pack epoxy primer followed by two-pack polyurethane topcoat provides superior protection. Inspect all metal surfaces every six months and touch up any chip immediately.
Salt Air and Steel Windows
Many older Fresnaye and Sea Point properties have original steel window frames. In the Atlantic Seaboard environment, these rust rapidly without proper maintenance. Annual inspection and immediate touch-up is the minimum maintenance standard. Full strip and re-prime on a five-year cycle is better. See our Atlantic Seaboard cost guide.
